Our Branch

Message from our President, Chris Brock

Welcome to the Gympie Labor branch.

Gympie Labor pays respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians of the land within the Gympie region including the Kabi Kabi / Gubbi Gubbi, Wakka Wakka and the Butchulla people. Gympie’s name derives from the Gubbi Gubbi word gimpi-gimpi, which means stinging tree.

The history of the Gympie Labor branch began as the Workers Political Association in the 1890’s. Andrew Fisher was first elected to the Queensland Legislative Council in 1893 representing Gympie, and then went on to become the fifth Prime Minister of Australia.

There’s more than meets the eye in Gympie. Graziers were the first European settlers and gold was discovered in 1867. Over the years the region has grown to include miners, foresters, farmers and artists. The region has a strong agricultural economy – our industries include beef, dairy, livestock and horticulture.

The Gympie Region is a dynamic and progressive community and many families have moved here seeking a better life. It is a place where change continues, as we witness a new green revolution in our region.

Our branch is a diverse group, comprising people from all walks of life including teachers; disability advocates; businesspeople; community workers; young families and tradies. We are a progressive branch with members from the Cooloola Coast, Murgon, Goomeri and of course Gympie and the surrounding areas.

At Gympie Labor, we enable our community to have direct contact with the Labor Party both at State and National levels. We encourage open and respectful discussion on issues and provide advocacy at a grass roots level. Through our communication of concerns, concepts and ideas with Ministers we aim to bring about change that provides a better future for all Australians.

If you want to be part of the change you want to see and spend time with like-minded people, come along and join us on the first Sunday of every month. We meet at 10am, at the Avenues Lifestyle Hall at 37 Red Hill Street, Gympie.

You can stay in touch with us by following us on Facebook here. Please contact me on this email address if you have any questions.
